Cortex-M85 core empowers graphics MCUs

Renesas 32-bit graphics-enabled MCUs in the RA8D1 group are based on a 480-MHz Arm Cortex-M85 core with a performance rating of 6.39 CoreMark/MHz. Aimed at high-resolution display and voice/vision multimodal AI designs, the microcontrollers rely on Arm Helium technology to boost performance by as much as 4 times for DSP and ML implementations.

RA8D1 devices include an LCD controller supporting resolutions up to 1280×800 pixels, parallel RGB and MIPI-DSI interfaces to external LCD and/or TFT displays, a 2D drawing engine, and a 16-bit CEU camera interface. They also provide multiple external memory interfaces for storing frame buffer and graphics assets.

To ease application development, Segger emWin and Microsoft GUIX graphic user interface software is fully integrated into the Renesas Flexible Software Package (FSP). Developers can also use the open-source Light and Versatile Embedded Graphics Library (LVGL) to create user interfaces for the RA8D1 MCUs.

The RA8D1 group of graphics microcontrollers are available now in 176-pin LQFP and 224-pin BGA packages. Renesas is also shipping the RA8D1 evaluation kit, which includes example projects targeted at graphics applications.
