Silicon is still viable in power, claims a new MOSFET architecture

While we’ve been hearing the drumbeat of “silicon is dead” in power semiconductors for nearly 10 years, according to Mark Granahan, CEO of iDEAL Semiconductor, it’s mainly the lack of innovation in silicon that has enabled that drumbeat. Moreover, he told Reuters that wideband gap (WBG) semiconductors like silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) are expensive and still face supply bottlenecks compared to cheaper standard silicon used in most power designs.

He claims that his company has created a novel power architecture that debunks the idea that the industry has reached the end of the road for silicon advancement. Granahan is confident that silicon-based power devices can still compete with WBG materials like SiC and GaN, widely known for their energy efficiency.
