Image sensor optimizes automated driving

Sony announced the upcoming release of the IMX735, a CMOS image sensor for automotive cameras boasting a pixel count of 17.42 effective megapixels. With one of the industry’s highest resolutions, the sensor will enable the development of automotive camera systems capable of complex sensing and recognition.

The IMX735’s high-definition capture extends the object recognition range, allowing better detection of road conditions, vehicles, pedestrians, and other objects. Early detection of far-away objects helps make automated driving systems safer. In addition, the sensor provides a horizontal pixel signal readout, easing synchronization with mechanical-scanning LiDAR, which also employs a horizontal scanning method.

The pixel structure and exposure method of the IMX735 improves saturation illuminance, yielding a wide dynamic range of 106 dB, even in HDR and LED flicker mitigation modes. In priority mode, the sensor’s dynamic range extends to 130 dB.

Housed in a 236-pin plastic BGA package, the IMX735 is 14.54×17.34 mm and AEC-Q100 Grade 2 qualified. Sampling of the image sensor is planned to begin in September 2023. A datasheet for the IMX735 was not available at the time of this announcement.
