MCU integrates application accelerator

As the premier member of the Renesas RL78 family of MCUs, the RL78/G24 runs at 48 MHz and packs a flexible application accelerator (FAA) to boost performance. Numerous timers and analog functions make the 16-bit microcontroller well-suited for motor, power supply, and lighting control systems.

The RL78/G24’s FAA serves as a coprocessor that operates independently of the CPU. It can relieve the CPU of such functions as inverter control, encryption, sensing, and arithmetic operations. The MCU also provides a 12-bit ADC capable of simultaneous sampling of three channels with a maximum conversion speed of 1 µs. Other features include a high-speed comparator with latency of 50 ns typical and multiple serial interfaces (SPI, UART, I2C, PMBus/SMBus, and DALI).

To conserve power, the RL78/G24 offers two standby modes. HALT mode reduces power consumption by 60% compared to normal operating mode, and STOP mode cuts power consumption by 99% compared to HALT mode. The part, which operates from a single supply of 1.6 V to 5.5 V, also has a SNOOZE mode.
