5-nm PAM4 DSP packs VCSEL drivers

KeystoneMM, a PAM4 DSP from MaxLinear, integrates VCSEL drivers for 800G and 400G multimode short-reach optical modules and active optical cables. The 5-nm CMOS device reduces both power consumption and cost for active optical cables (AOCs) and multimode links used in data centers and AI/ML clusters.

The company reports that multimode optical links are more economical than single-mode optical solutions for short-reach applications. These shorter-reach links dominate the interconnect volume for most AI/ML deployments. Drew Guckenberger, vice president of High Speed Interconnect at MaxLinear, commented, “Our 5-nm Keystone PAM4 DSP with integrated VCSEL drivers addresses the demands of this key market, enabling best-in-class power consumption of <10 W for 800G short-reach optical transceivers and AOCs.”

KeystoneMM, part number MxL93684, is the latest member of the Keystone 5-nm PAM4 DSP family. Intended for both 400G and 800G applications, the series provides 106.25-Gbps host-side electrical I/O to match the line-side 106.25-Gbps interface rate. Variants support single-mode optics (EML and SiPh), multimode optics (VCSEL transceivers and AOCs), and active electrical cables (AECs). In addition, they can be paired with the company’s companion transimpedance amplifiers (TIAs).

KeystoneMM is available to sample to key customers and will be released to full production in Q1 2024. A datasheet for the device was not available at the time of this announcement. Click here to for more information about MaxLinear’s portfolio of PAM4 DSPs.
