32-bit MCUs embed hardware-based security

Microchip’s PIC32CZ CA series of 32-bit MCUs integrates a hardware security module (HSM) for applications that require secure communications. Powered by a 300-MHz Arm Cortex-M7 processor, the microcontrollers also offer a wide range of connectivity and flash memory options.

The series comprises four models: two with the embedded HSM (PIC32CZ CA90) and two without the security module (PIC32CZ CA80). The HSM in the CA90 variants operates as a secure subsystem with a separate MCU on board that runs the firmware and security functions. These functions include hardware secure boot, key storage, cryptographic acceleration, and a true random number generator. Optional factory provisioning is also available for the PIC32CZ CA90.

Suitable for a range of consumer and industrial applications, the PIC32CZ CA MCUs provide up to 8 Mbytes of flash memory and 1 Mbyte of SRAM, both with error correction code (ECC) to mitigate data corruption. Connectivity interfaces include USART/UART, I2C, SPI, CAN FD, High-Speed USB, and Gigabit Ethernet.

The microcontrollers are available in 100-pin, 144-pin, 176-pin, and 208-pin TQFP and BGA packages. In 208-pin BGAs, the PIC32CZ CA80 and PIC32CZ CA90 cost $14.80 and $15.54, respectively, in lots of 10,000 units.
