Low-cost MCUs enable smarter embedded devices

Leveraging ST’s 40-nm process and an Arm Cortex-M33 core, STM32C5 MCUs deliver increased speed for cost-sensitive embedded devices. The microcontrollers run faster than many entry-level chips, improving the capabilities of compact smart devices in factories, homes, cities, and infrastructure while keeping dynamic power consumption low (<80 µA/MHz).

Running at 144 MHz and achieving a CoreMark score of 593, the Cortex-M33 offers up to three times the performance of typical Cortex-M0+ devices. ST’s 40-nm cost-efficient manufacturing process supports higher clock speeds and larger on-chip memory. The STM32C5 series integrates 128 KB to 1024 KB of flash and 64 KB to 256 KB of RAM.

The MCUs are designed to meet SESIP3 and PSA Level 3 security requirements, with memory protection, tamper protection, cryptographic engines, and temporal isolation to protect processes such as secure boot and firmware updates. Variants with additional security provide hardware unique key support, secure key storage, and hardware cryptographic accelerators for symmetric and asymmetric operations.

The STM32C5 MCUs are entering production now and are available in packages ranging from 20 to 144 pins. Pricing starts at $0.64 each in 10,000-unit quantities.
