Kioxia improves e.MMC flash memory

Kioxia is sampling Embedded MultiMediaCard (e.MMC) devices based on an updated version of its BiCS Flash 3D memory that enhances read and write performance. Aimed at consumer applications, the embedded flash products are compliant with the JEDEC e.MMC V5.1 standard and come in 64-Gbyte and 128-Gbyte versions.

Compared to previous-generation devices, the new e-MMC components achieve a 2.5x increase in sequential and random write performance and a 2.7x increase in random read performance. Additionally, terabytes written (TBW) is improved by 3.3x over previous devices, in conjunction with an enhanced area setting for the entire e.MMC area. TBW measures how many cumulative writes a drive can expect to complete over its lifespan.

The e.MMC parts integrate flash memory and a controller in a single package, relieving the host processor from having to directly control flash memory. Mass production of the next-generation e.MMC flash memories is expected in 2024. A datasheet was not available at the time of this announcement.
