3D depth sensor is adaptable across varied platforms

Set to debut at next month’s CES 2024 trade show, MagikEye’s Pico depth sensor marks a significant step forward in the company’s AI and robotics journey. The sensor leverages MagikEye’s Invertible Light technology (ILT), which operates on a bare-metal ARM Cortex-M0 processor within the Raspberry Pi RP2040. While the Pico sensor demonstrates its 3D sensing ability on the RP2040, the underlying technology is crafted for adaptability. ILT allows seamless operation on a variety of MCU cores, including those based on the RISC-V architecture.

A combination of optics and mathematics, Invertible Light generates a 3D point cloud using a standard dot projector and an image sensor. This method swiftly computes 3D depth data from the projected dot pattern of an object.

“Just as personal computers democratized access to technology and spurred a revolution in productivity, the Pico depth sensor is set to ignite a similar transformation in the realms of AI and robotics,” commented Takeo Miyazawa, founder & CEO of MagikEye. “It is not just an innovative product; it’s a gateway to new possibilities in fields like autonomous vehicles, smart home systems, and beyond, where AI and depth sensing converge to create smarter, more intuitive solutions.”

MagikEye’s lineup of 3D depth sensing devices can be used in a wide range of applications, including smartphones, robotics, and surveillance. A datasheet for the Pico depth sensor was not available at the time of this announcement.
