GaN inverter kit employs digital signal controller

Transphorm’s 3-kW DC/AC inverter evaluation board pairs four SuperGaN FETs with Microchip’s dsPIC33CK single-core digital signal controller. The design tool highlights GaN’s superior performance and enables an understanding of how SuperGaN FETs can be used in various inverter applications, such as vehicle-to-grid (V2G) charging systems, solar inverters, and UPS systems.

At the core of the single-phase inverter assembly are four TP65H050G4WS 650-V, 50-mΩ SuperGaN FETs configured as a full bridge. The kit provides the main features of a single-phase inverter in a functional configuration operating at or above 50 kHz with a flat efficiency curve of greater than 98.5% at 500 W and higher.

Supplied on a removable plug-in module (PIM), the dsPIC33CK digital signal controller is based on a 100-MHz dsPIC33C core with an integrated DSP engine and on-chip peripherals. It also includes preprogrammed firmware that can be customized to meet application requirements.

The inverter evaluation board, designated the TDINV3000W050B-KIT, is available through Digi-Key and Mouser. Firmware updates for the dsPIC33CK PIM will be available for downloading from Microchip’s website.
