GaN system-in-package targets USB-C PD adapters
Weltrend announced its first GaN-based system-in-package integrating an AC/DC controller and Transphorm’s 240-mΩ, 650-V SuperGaN FET. The WT7162RHUG24A is intended for USB Type- C Power Delivery (PD) adapters used to charge smartphones, tablets, laptops, and other smart devices from 45 W to 100 W.
The multimode flyback PWM controller and GaN FET are housed together in a surface-mount 24-pin, 8×8-mm QFN package, achieving a power density of 26 W/in.3. Key specifications include a peak power efficiency of greater than 93%, a maximum operating frequency of 180 kHz, and a wide output voltage range. The device is compliant with USB PD 3.0, which includes a programmable power supply (PPS) function that allows the output voltage to be adjusted in increments as small as 20 mV from 3.3 V to 21 V.
The WT7162RHUG24A operates in quasi-resonant (QR) mode during heavy load and discontinuous conduction mode with valley switching during light load. Built-in protection features include brown-out, overvoltage, overcurrent, and output short circuit.
Transphorm will showcase the Weltrend system-in-package at the 2023 Applied Power Electronics Conference (APEC 2023). Samples of the WT7162RHUG24A SiP will be available in the second quarter of 2023.
